The Science of Speaking Up

If you see something, say something.

Many of us have heard a version of this call to action before. It’s meant to empower people to speak up when they notice something going awry. The trouble is, speaking up never happens inside a vacuum. It’s fraught with imbalances of power, fears of retribution, and personality-driven obstacles. As a result, many of us keep quiet.

In “The Science of Speaking Up,” we hear from speaking-up expert Dr. Mona Weiss, Assistant Professor of Management and Diversity at the Free University of Berlin, to learn about her research into “employee voice.” We come to understand why, exactly, speaking up is so hard and learn key strategies that can help leaders lift all voices.
